When a Personal Journey Becomes a Bigger Calling
Welcome Back – its been a little while.
There are moments in life when I realise my journey is quietly changing shape.
For a long time, this space, Embrace Dementia Journey, has been where I share reflections from caring for my mother, the lessons that taught me patience, and the small moments that still hold meaning even as memory shifts. It has been a place of honesty, learning, and connection.
Over time, something else has been growing alongside this.
Through my studies in dementia care, listening to other carers’ stories, and walking this path day by day, I’ve noticed a shared thread: many carers feel unseen, culturally disconnected from services, or unsure where to find support that respects their values and identity.
I’ve also seen how powerful care becomes when it is grounded in culture, relationship, and belonging.
From this space of learning and listening, a new initiative has slowly begun to take shape — Caring Spirits & Wairua Manaaki.
It isn’t a “finished” thing or a grand launch.
It is a seed being nurtured.
Caring Spirits comes from the same place as this blog: lived experience, aroha, and a belief that carers deserve support that honours who they are and where they come from. It is especially close to my heart to explore culturally safe, community-led approaches that are responsive for Indigenous Australian and Māori whānau, while remaining inclusive of all carers walking this journey.
Right now, this work is about listening.
About building relationships.
About learning what is truly needed.
I share this not as an announcement, but as part of my journey. If you’ve walked alongside me here, then you are already part of the story.
If this space has ever helped you feel seen or supported, please know that Caring Spirits grows from that same intention.
Thank you for being here with me.
Walking this journey together with aroha,
Hinemoana

Small Moments That Still Matter
In the coming weeks, I’ll also be sharing a new series called Small Moments That Still Matter — reflections on the everyday moments of connection that continue even as memory changes.
As I look ahead, I hope to share reflections here every couple of weeks and continue growing Caring Spirits gently and thoughtfully.
Connect With Me!
Caring for someone living with dementia can feel both meaningful and lonely. If something you’ve read here resonates with you, you’re welcome to reach out.
I read messages with care and respect, and I value hearing the stories of other carers walking this path.
This blog is a calm and respectful space for carers and families. To maintain privacy and emotional safety, public comments are not currently enabled.
If you wish to share your experience or connect, you are warmly welcome to email me.
Please note I may take a little time to reply, as caring and study come first — but every message is received with aroha.

Noho ora mai!
“Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa.”
Let us keep close together, not far apart.
