When Knowledge Meets Love

Nau Mai Haere Mai!

Welcome back — it’s nice to be back!

My previous reflection, ‘Small Moments That Matter’, was about noticing the quiet gifts that still exist within the dementia journey, the smile, the shared cup of tea, the familiar look, the brief moment of connection that means more than words can say.

Since then, life has continued in its usual mix of caring, family, study, and those everyday moments that often go unseen.

As many of you know, I have also continued my studies in dementia care. The more I learn about dementia — memory, behaviour, neurobiology, and the changes it brings — the more I understand this journey with Mum, and with so many other families walking a similar path.

Knowledge does not remove the sadness of seeing someone you love change. It does not stop grief from visiting in unexpected moments. But it can bring something else: compassion, patience, and understanding.

It reminds me that repetition is not stubbornness.

Confusion is not choice.

Frustration often comes from a brain trying hard to make sense of a changing world.

Most of all, it reminds me that behind memory loss and confusion is still the person we love.

This journey is shaping me not only as a carer, but as a human being. It is also part of what inspired the gentle beginnings of Caring Spirits & Wairua Manaaki, a space growing from lived experience, learning, and deep respect for carers and Elders.

To anyone reading who is walking this road too, please know you are not alone.

Sometimes knowledge meets love in the quietest ways — through patience, through understanding, and through simply staying beside someone when words are no longer enough.

He aroha whakatō, he aroha puta mai.

Simple, warm, timeless

Noho ora mai.
